Pampore Saffron: Quick Answer

Pampore saffron comes from a small town about 15 km south-east of Srinagar, known as Kashmir’s “Saffron Town”. Its saffron grows on raised karewa plateaus at around 1,600 metres, where cool, dry autumns help give deep colour and strong aroma.

  • Bloom and harvest: mid-October to November
  • Kashmir saffron has a GI tag since 2020
  • Look for “Kashmir” or “Pampore” and the GI logo on the pack

Where is Pampore?

Pampore is in Pulwama district, south Kashmir, along the Jhelum river and just off the Srinagar–Jammu highway.

  • Its flat-topped highlands are called karewas
  • Every autumn they turn purple with saffron flowers
  • That is why people call it the “Saffron Bowl of Kashmir”

Why Pampore kesar is special

A few natural things come together here.

  • Altitude: fields at about 1,600 m
  • Karewa soil: well-drained old lake-bed soil, so the corms do not rot
  • Cold, dry autumn: cool nights and clear days help colour and aroma
  • Hand care: families still pick and separate every flower by hand

The GI tag

In 2020, Kashmir saffron received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Only saffron grown in the defined Kashmir region can be sold as “Kashmir saffron”.

  • The GI area centres on Pampore and also covers parts of Budgam, Srinagar and Kishtwar
  • For buyers, the GI logo and origin on the pack are a simple check
  • It protects against imported saffron being sold as Kashmiri

Visiting the saffron fields

If you are travelling to Kashmir in autumn, the bloom is worth seeing.

  • Best time: late October to early November
  • Go early in the morning to see families picking flowers
  • The bloom lasts only a few weeks, so check local updates first

Why the harvest changes year to year

Saffron here depends heavily on rain at the right time. A dry spell or late rain can shrink a season’s crop.
